Two materials that disagree about time, held one millimetre apart. The surface forgets you over six seconds. The steel beneath it has already answered.

I

The core, handled

Six seconds to forget the shape of a hand.

Press and hold

Forty millimetres of viscoelastic, formulated so that its glass transition falls between 25 and 35 °C. A hand is above that. The foam under the hand goes soft because the hand is warming it; the foam beside the hand stays firm because nothing is. Lift, and it needs six seconds to lose the shape — because it was never holding it.

What decides it

Every joint in this bed is one millimetre of glue.

The viscoelastic

50 kg/m³ · 40 mm

Fifty kilograms of polymer in a cubic metre; the rest is air. The grade is chosen for one reason, and it is not softness — it is where it puts the transition. Lighter, and the foam would be soft in every room it was ever carried into. Heavier, and it would be a board in an unheated bedroom in February.

The bond lines

3 × 1 mm

Three of them, one millimetre each: under the ticking, between the viscoelastic and the support foam, and under the spring unit. A hot-melt web at 150 °C. Where the line meets foam it wicks into the open cells and interlocks; where it meets a woven face it can only wet. Run it thin and it starves at the shoulder, where the load is worst. Run it thick and it becomes a plate, and stiffens the very layer the buyer paid to have soft.

The spring unit

7 zones · 140 mm

One thousand and eighty-eight coils in a 160 × 200 core, every one sewn into its own pocket. A pocketed coil answers the load directly above it and nothing else, which is the only reason a shoulder can sink while a pelvis does not.

The surface is late. The steel is not. That is the whole bed.
